Off again through the Bavarian Countryside. The clouds are overcast, and we are all hoping that the rain holds off until much later.
We had a quick photo stop to photograph the little chapel of St. Coloman…

St. Coloman from Neuschwanstein |
and to get some first photos of Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig II of Bavaria’s fairytale castle on a small mountain.
Once in Schwangau, Tara got our tickets and we caught a horse carriage up to a restaurant near the castle. It is a long hike up and everyone was happy to have the horses do the work.
Mary and Paul and later Tara and Claus, made the further
hike up to the Marien Bridge. We stopped
for photos of Hohenschwangau Castle…
with views of Forggensee beyond.
And the town of Schwangau.
Once we got to the bridge we had great views of the castle…
with Bannwaldsee Lake in the background.
And Pollat Waterfall was right below us.
The group then joined the tour of the castle. Mary had already visited the castle twice and it had a lot of stairs…so she opted to go down to the restaurant for some warmth and hot chocolate.
After that castle we headed off to see the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle. To get to this one we found another horse carriage and took it up to the castle. Hohenschwangau was a childhood home of King Ludwig and it was here that he decided that someday he would build his castle on the nearby hill…that castle is now Neuschwanstein.
Again, no photos inside.
But the castle was very photogenic,
as were the gardens…
and the views of Forggensee.
By the time we finished touring the castle it was a bit misty. We waited quite a while for the horse carriage but it never showed up. Perhaps the rain made it too slippery for the horses. Anyway, we all trekked down to Schwangau. The walk wasn’t too long and there were a lot of trees so we didn’t get too wet.
We took a few photos of Schwangau…
and a couple of Neuschwanstein from the town...
before having a very late lunch at a restaurant in Schwangau. From there we headed directly out for the Munich airport and the end of our travels in Bavaria.
After checking into the hotel we said our goodbyes to
everyone. It was a good group to travel
with and we all had a wonderful time
